Microsoft Office options

There’s quite a bewildering array of options for purchasing Microsoft Office nowadays. This post aims to help you choose the right Microsoft Office package for your needs. — In a nutshell, there are two different types of Microsoft Office that are available to buy; a perpetual license, or an Office 365 subscription.

 

Microsoft Office perpetual licenses

The perpetual license entitles you to install the version of MS Office that you have purchased on a single computer, for the lifetime of that computer. This is the way many people have been used to purchasing MS Office in the past.

 

Office 2016 Home & Student (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, One Note) – RRP $240

Office 2016 Home & Business (Outlook, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, One Note) – RRP $425

Office 2016 Professional (Access, Publisher, Outlook, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, One Note) – approx $850

Office 365 subscriptions

Office 365 entitles you to install the most current version of all the MS Office applications, for the duration of your subscription – one year. If a new version of MS Office is released, you can upgrade to it for no cost. The applications included in all subscriptions are: Access, Publisher, Outlook, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, One Note.

General plans

These plans allow you to install the Office software onto a computer, and also come with additional Onedrive storage and additional Outlook.com functionality.

Office 365 Personal – installation on 1 computer – RRP $89 / year

Office 365 Home – installation on up to 5 computers – RRP $142 / year

Business plans

These plans are a mix of the Microsoft Office software product and online services provided by Microsoft. If you have your own domain name, then the combination of the local Outlook software and the Exchange email hosting is almost unrivalled. Other online services include Onedrive for Business, Skype for Business, Sharepoint & Teams. Microsoft are continually improving and adding  to these services. Each user account that is entitled to Office applications can install the software on up to 5 devices.

Office 365 Business Essentials – Online services only – $6.90 ($8.30) per user per month*

Office 365 Business – Office applications only – $13.50 ($16.20) per user per month*

Office 365 Business Premium – Online services AND Office  applications – $17.30 ($20.70) per user per month*

*The price listed is the price with an annual commitment, the price in brackets is the month to month price. Prices are ex GST.
